Facing a tough call?
Tummy grumbling?
Congratulations on being
a genius!
All credit goes to your
empty stomach!!
Delay eating this to make better decisions |
New research from the
Netherlands finds being hungry may help you make better decisions. Researchers
tested college students on their decision-making abilities in the morning. Half
the participants ate breakfast first, while the rest took the tests on an empty
stomach. The hungry group consistently made more sound choices: They strategised
better and favoured greater long-term rewards over instant gratification.
How so?
“Being hungry makes you
think less and act more on intuition,” says study author Denise de Ridder,
Ph.D., a psychology professor at Universiteit Utrecht. When you’re facing a
complicated decision that doesn’t have a clear right and wrong answer, going
with your gut feeling may turn out better than deliberating, de Ridder says.
But that doesn’t mean you
should fast all day to be a genius at your job. It only works with hard
decisions that have unpredictable outcomes, like buying a house, de Ridder
says. That distinction may also explain why you sometimes make questionable
choices when you’re starving — like spending £30 on snacks at the grocery store
when you only stopped for milk. That bonehead move is a simple decision, de
Ridder says.
So next time you’re
weighing a really difficult choice, like a job offer, consider thinking it over
first thing in the morning and listening to your gut. It may be wiser than all
the plus-minus lists in the world.
I hope this helps you
be outstanding.
That is all -
David
